1199 instrumentation on a 959

How cool would it be to have a color display on the 959.

Another member in this forum, PatinaCC, posted about his installation of a color 1199 instrumentation unit on his 959, Ducati 959 Panigale Forum - View Single Post - What did you do to your Ducati 959 Panigale today?
Inspired by the idea, I ordered a used 1199 base model instrumentation unit on Ebay.

From what I read in the 899 forum thread about this conversion, 1199 dash conversion? - Ducati 899 Panigale Forum
the best match for this experiment is the 1199 base model instrumentation unit. The more premium 1199 model lineup instrumentation is designed to adjust suspension settings from the instrument which is reported to cause additional compatibility issues.

Here is a link to a post from another thread that has some relevant video about the conversion. Ducati 959 Panigale Forum - View Single Post - What did you do to your Ducati 959 Panigale today?

WARNING: This mod is probably a bad idea. But, I will give it a shot anyway.

Known compatibility issues include inaccurate total mileage display. The 1199 unit will continue counting total miles from where the instrument last counted, be that at zero for a new unit, or whatever number a used unit last counted. The reports from 899 owners who have done this state that when the original instrument in reinstalled, accurate total miles are displayed since that number is stored in another location and syncs properly with the OEM unit.

Additionally, there is no way to turn off a yellow error code on an unknown device and yellow engine warning light. Check out the video in the links above.

Pictures and full report to follow.

I don't feel comfortable enough to play with electronics, but this is a really nice mod. Good luck and keep us posted.

Why not try the 1299 base dash instead. Remember this all started on an 899 which is brothers with the 1199.

You think the 1299 instrumentation is more likely to be compatible on the 959? I never considered that possibility. I will do some more research.

Unless they are exactly the same unit, I would say yes.

To help out..I build custom bikes and also a lot of modifications across various bike platforms. In my quest to modify the 959 to a hybrid 959s model (something Ducati should have done). I plugged in a 1299 dash, I couldn’t initially start the bike and after some work I got it started but errors were major as the ECU and parameters of the 1299 technology is far more advanced than the 1199 base and s range. The 959 is more similar to the 1199 than people realise and as such it is far more compatible to tweeks swaps and changes. I’m working on the electronic suspension conversion at the moment, will keep all informed of progress. Also building a harness and ECU program, basically taking it back to basics then to add in electronic suspension additions, re worked head mapping (1199 top end install) for fuel trim/ tuning, engine parameters, etv, rpm, gearing etc. should give us a program that can be built for a flash upgrade, it’s going to take time though it’s pretty complex. Outcome will be less compatibility issues for general upgrades.

This sounds great.

Do you have the Ducati engineering/ service software to experiment and do your work?

I wondered how feasible it would be ever since I found out about the cluster being different on the 1299 vs. the 959 I am looking to get.

Would be interested in trying this too. Thank you for posting.

Weve got some tech software which was and is being developed in line with DUC programs and currently trialing both 959 and 1199 ECUs being coded with mods. Also modded BBS and loom. Getting some success but every time we fix one issue another pops up. The bike runs well with no safety issues. Just get dash errors which are annoying. If we get it perfected then looking to develop a package that could be sold. However it would affect people's warranty which some may not be keen on. I will keep everyone posted. Going to be stripping the top end down soon and matching an 1199r topend. This will give us a hybrid 959 with bigger bore, longer stroke, larger throttle bodies, will also sort out gearing. It will be branded the 999 Panigale S ...technically it will be an 1199 but a very unique and different one.
