Why I traded my 959

Spoiler: Not because I didn't like it.

I was the first 959 Panigale purchaser in Canada late 2015. Rode it extensively in 2016 as my only bike. I also purchased a CBR300R for my wife as I preferred not to have a pillion. As a 50 something, she had a lot of guts to take her MSF course, pass her license and start riding. She rode a few times with our Harley buddies and relatives. They all ride hogs without exception. You can visualize that we stood-out. Even more so for me as most of these rides were at 50 kms/hr. As you all know, this snail speed was killing me. I needed another bike. Something more comfortable at low speed that would sorta fit-in while satisfying my lust for sport bikes. Bought a black Monster 1200R in the fall of 2016.

During both 2017 and 2018, the CBR wasn't used even once. A lot of excuses later, the Mrs.D finally admitted that's she's too scared to ride but stated an interest in being a passenger instead of a rider. That's cool, so I took her out on the Monster. She hated it. The vibration, the noise and the pillion seat which is no larger and thicker than the Pani's was a "No Buena".

Ok, I'll buy something that's good for two-up. Definitely had to be a high performance sport touring bike.
Since there's only a handful of those out there, the Ducati Multstrada Pikes Peak topped the list "hands down" as the bike that consistently wins the race to the clouds. Wife agreed after having been on one as a passenger courtesy of our dealer's demo. Awesome. I'll track-only the Panigale. Unfortunately, having a third bike didn't fly too well. Consequently, either the Monster or the Panigale had to go with the CBR.

The decision:
The Monster is a naked roadster that's a better complement to a fairing bike such as the Multistrada.
The Monster is better suited for the Harley crowd when the wife is not present.
The Monster is a better hooligan than the Pani.
I had put a lot of upgrades on the M1200R.
I don't go to the track as often as previously thought.
I can still use Monster 1200R for a track outing.
Heck, I can even bring the Multistrada but I'll leave the panniers in the paddock.

Do I miss the Panigale?
D*mn right I do, but trade-offs have to be made sometimes.

Yeah yeah. Too funny. Nice garage Junior.
However, what you have there is $7000 or more in insurance premium per year here in Ontario.
That's not a wise decision for me. Beside, good negotiating skill involves knowing what to give up for other considerations. Be that business or family.

He has a point @DarR !!! Why wasn't it an option to keep the 959? Cost of ownership?

Utah is an amazing state, very beautiful with lots of good riding. Plus the ex Miller motorsports park is there, I think they call it the Utah motorsports campus now. I want to move there but the wife doesnt want to, I could just transfer my job there so that is a non issue. You do have winters there that I am not a fan of but I love Utah. So many amazing places to see there.

Winter is not an issue for me, it's a bonus as Utah skiing in bowls at 11,000ft is amazing.
