Blown Engine?

962 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  mefunny
Hello everyone!

Just bought a 959 a few weeks ago with 7k miles. Went on a spirited ride yesterday and I think I blew my engine. Oil light came on, loss power, and a loud knocking noise. Is this a sign of a blown engine. If so, how much do repairs for something like this go for? Would I need a new engine? How much do they run for and where can I purchase one?

Thanks!

You have to diagnose the problem, if you're not mechanically inclined you'll need to bring it to a shop or find a friend that knows what he's doing.

I bet the water pump gears broke and got into the engine (that's the 899/959/1199/1299 specialty). To verify, drain the oil and see if you find plastic particle in the oil.
If you do not know how to do the job yourself, sell the bike for parts and buy a new one (not a Ducati). An engine can cost $3000+ (eBay) and a Ducati shop will charge you another $3000+ for the labor.

Drained the oil and no sign of plastic. Anything else I should check?

Does the motor turn over with the starter? If so do a compression check.
Finally got a mechanic to take a look at it. They found gold shavings in the oil and think it's the bearings. Leakage test and compression test came back good
