Issues starting my new 959?

Hi Guys,

I've recently purchased a new 959 and have put 660km (410miles) on it and noticed that on the first start of the day I've been having trouble, 3-6 attempts to get it started.

My old Monster 659 started first go no problems.

I've taken a video of it and wonder if I could lean on anyone on these forums to tell me what they think? I have the first service coming up in about a week or two but wonder if it needs to go in earlier.

Kind Regards

Is that with the bike on its side stand? If so, what's it like upright (with you sitting on it)?
I had a problem with the demo 899. Trick was absolutely no throttle when starting.
Charcoal canister is a hot start issue (engine at operating temp), as far as I'm tracking...
My bike has over 1000miles on it and I have had absolutely zero starting issues. I would take it to the dealership immediately and have them fix that. It's not normal. Keep us posted on what you find out.
I have that problem from time to time, cold start and hot start. Zero throttle helps and turning the bike all the way off then back on helps.

I was told at the independent shop I went to that the best thing to do is remove the charcoal canister. They do that on all the race panigales at this shop and said the problem goes away and never comes back. This is something the dealership will never do for you.

Some will ;)

Did you by any chance contact ducati about it?
I've got the same cold start issue, hope i don't have to remove that charcoal canister.
Hi guys,

I have the exact same problem. Cold star takes several goes to start up. If its at night time and temp is low it is even worse. Its getting bit ridiculous.
No issues here yet, what is your ambient temperature?
Temp is fine because had bike looked at other day because of slight coolant overflow leak. Just called my dealer they said they had one in already and a very slight chance it could be to do with rust in the fuel tank.
I've had the charcoal canister removed and I'm still seeing this daily. I'm planning on taking it back into the dealership later this week.

Did you get the purge valve issue resoled as stated by sean?

I don't think so.

We'll see what they say, but it's gotten really bad on mine. I've had to clutch-pop it to life first start for the last 3 days. After that it purrs like a kitten so I dunno.

I'll report back when I hear something.
Some dude posted a comment on your Youtube about high oil viscosity. I have doubts about this but would like clarification either way. Please keep us posted. Good video btw.
I had cold start issues

I had problems starting it...so I read the manual...it's on page 197-198

1. Move the key to on
2. Leave the bike for a few minutes as oil needs to warm up and reach all points that needs lubricated
3. The bike need to be straight up (horizontal) with stand up as safety sensor prevents engine starting when stand down
4. Press the start button

This made a difference for me...If I'm stating the bl..dy obvious just ignore me.

Interesting. I've been starting my bike right after key on with the kickstand down and in neutral almost explosively for 2,700 miles. But I'll definitely keep this in mind and leave the key on for a minute before i start it. I haven't had any problems yet.

OK, you just lost me here, how is the oil warming up and reaching all points of lubrication before starting the motor.:surprise:

My bike starts just fine hot or cold on the sidestand. Requirement to start with side stand up sounds very questionable but I will reread my owners manual for this information.
