Hi All
Has anyone else experienced their 959 unexpectedly stalling? This has happened to me twice now and the first time I almost came off the bike as I didn’t realise it had stalled and I released the clutch and the rear wheel locked. This has happened in two very similar circumstances where I have been riding the bike for 30 or 40 minutes so it’s warm and all seems fine. I have then been approaching either a traffic light or intersection on a downhill – I start breaking and changing down through the gears and when the clutch is pulled in the bike stalls without warning. The first time I did not realise and was almost flicked off the bike when I let clutch out and locked the rear wheel. The second time I realise it had stalled and kept the clutch in the just restarted my bike.

I also have a Monster 659 and rode the same sections of roads and did the same braking and changing of gears and don’t have the same issue.
Anyone else experienced similar behaviour on their 959 or want to hazard a guess as to the reason as it has made me a little wary of the bike now?

Simon

This has happened to me twice, where the engine just cut out... but I haven't posted about it because I'm not sure what made it happen. It hasn't happened again since - that was about 300 miles ago.

happened to me more than 3 times about 600 miles ago. Especially during downshifting gears 3 to 2 and 2 to 1s it would stall. It would start again on bike speed momentum after quick clutch release. It made me wonder but it does not doi it anymore.
Either I am not doing rough downshifts anymore or engine and transmission finally working properly after brake in period

Hi Tomi and Dingo - thanks for sharing, I thought at first it might just be me. My bike is only a 200km's away from its first service so hopefully it will settle down.

No such issue here. Thanks for the heads up!

Do you guys live in areas where there is a big difference between the elevation of the roads you usually ride? As in, you'd be riding at sea level, then the next day maybe 2000ft above?

No same here - I live in Sydney which is at sea level with no major changes of altitude....

This happened to me twice over the weekend. Once I was shifting up from 2nd to 3rd and once I was taking off in first. Weird...

Yes it is weird - I also still have the 'cold start' problem which I don't believe has been resolved by Ducati yet. So now I have a bike that takes 4 or 5 attempts to start when it's cold, and sometimes stalls unexpectedly when it's hot? This is the 4th Ducati I've owned and ironically it's the only one I've bought brand new and that's had these types of major issues :-(

I haven't had this issue with mine however a mate of mine has... stalled on him at a roundabout (traffic circle) and he almost got collected by a truck... so might be a random small problem between a few bikes.. or when those conditions are just right.. boom.

Mine has done it a few times. I've noticed it's when your gearing down to 3rd or 2nd. If I rev match it doesn't do it however if I just pull the clutch in the revs dip and then it stalls. I only started riding it last Tuesday and in the past week I've been riding it it has only done it three times (I'm on 780km's atm). I can usually just clutch start it to recover. I'm taking it in tomorrow for the first service and see what my mechanic says.

I had this happen to me twice in a day, I was out riding around in the city. I would come up to a sharp right turn and start slowing down and down shift from 3rd into 2nd and the bike would die. I would complete the turn just coasting and then restart the bike and go. Thought maybe i just screwed something up while shifting. Ive only had it happen i think 2 or three times so far, and not recently.

I'm very new to this bike but my observation; I've noticed when you are riding if you pull in the clutch the bike's RPM, for a very brief moment , dips very low (like for a split second the bike almost sounds like it's going to stall. I wonder if maybe it has something to do with letting out too much clutch before gassing it (while shifting) at this exact time when the RPM is very low. Just a thought anyways.

I've never had my 959 unexpectedly stall out...

...but I also religiously rev match on downshifts while decelerating and engine brake. I've never really just clutched in while riding and allowed my 959 to reach idle engine speeds and coast.

I've noticed that the factory fuel cut is quick, but its never been that drastic such that it lets the engine speed reduce beyond the threshold and kill the engine.

So I got it back today. The person who serviced both my Ducati's is Scott Williams at Duc-Pen Ducati Specialist in Penrith, NSW (Ducati Servicing Sydney - Duc-Pen - Penrith). He says it is the factory tune on the bikes. He said there was a way to "fix" it and that would be to tune the bike to run a bit richer. At the moment it runs lean to pass emissions. That being said, he did mention he reset all the parameters on the bike. So I'm just going to leave it be for now and see how I go. I also had a previous issue with the bike being hard to start when cold which has pretty much gone away. But he did show me a trick for making it easier to start if it ever does it again in the future.

I just rode my bike from the dealership and the same thing happened to me. I was downshifting approaching a signal and the power cuts off. Had a line of cars behind me and scared the s**** of me. Don't want this to be happen when your bike has had under 10 miles on it.
I will call the dealer and let him know of the issue and see what they have to say.
Just got home so I will let the first ride on my brand new panigale sink in .
