Wheelie Experience !

Hey Guys!

After getting about 1700 miles on my bike I decided to try clutch up wheelies on Tuesday this week because I'm sure you all know from riding, but the 959 has a way of really urging their riders to push it just a bit more, and in regards to wheelies in a good way!

From what I learned, DTC does has a way of affecting wheelies; around DTC 3, the wheel comes up (few inches), but is quickly put down from the TC engaging, 1-2 the wheel comes up a bit more maybe (5-8inches) if you really hit the rpm sweet spot but is difficult to carry out. With DTC completely off, the wheel comes up everytime the clutch is held long enough, and enough throttle is given.

I was doing clutch ups in first gear to just get familiar with things on this bike, and after about 10 minutes of playing with rpm ranges I found that a rolling start in 1st gear at around 4.5-5k rpms then holding the clutch in til about 7k - 8k consistently got the bike up to a higher than 45 degree angle. I only worked on this for an hour but on a slight incline/decline road (hard to find straights in California where I live), but I found that popping the clutch (letting the clutch out) at 8k rpm with a 5k rpm start generally got me to balance point a lot faster, and popping the clutch at around 7k made for a lesser angle (higher than 45 degrees BUT easier to carry for a good 50-100ft .

I'll be trying to experiment in 2nd gear come Friday morn so I'll keep you updated on my progress with wheelies on this bike! Please share information that you all have gathered , and if you have any questions I'll try to do my best to answer them ! This is my first time working strictly on wheelies with this bike.

CHEERS!

Where we do agree is that less engine braking results in a smoother ride.

Just shut it off and go for a quick squirt, bud ;-)

use it on "3" then use it on "off" don't bother with the other settings for this simple test

So, you're saying that the Owner's Manual is wrong?

I've tried EBC 1, 2 and 3 where the book is right. I haven't tried OFF yet but I'll give it a try.
The owner's manual lied to us. Ducati lied to us. Straight from the top. Those bastards. Class Action! #OccupyDucati

May I suggest that we move this "Owner's Manual" topic out of this wheelie thread and into the EBC thread?

If you're right, it's more valuable there.
This is intriguing. As I noted in my last reply, there is no engine braking control in EBC OFF, meaning that there is maximum engine brake occurring. This is from pages 69-72 of the Owner's Manual, and Denis confirms this. Also written in the last sentence of the introductory paragraph to the EBC segment is the following: "The EBC can also be disabled (level OFF); in this configuration no torque is transmitted backward." Yet Kevin, you're saying that you've tried all options back and forth numerous times and found the opposite to be true? In your case then, there is full engine braking control with EBC off, aka there is nearly zero engine brake happening? I'll definitely be trying a brief run later with EBC off once I have the chance. How do you feel about " - - 1" over " - - 2" by the way?
I found the difference in settings around town to be negligible which is why I thought it was too abrupt before I knew there was an off switch. But this was my first duc so I went with it.

I suspect that a seasoned track rat or racer could better distinguish their settings.

I have quoted, copied and pasted the most important EBC contradictory comments to the EBC thread for further discussions there:
http://www.959panigale.net/forum/95...3265-anyone-adjust-ebc-race-any-mode-yet.html

In closing, EBC for wheelie purposes can be summarized as follows:
Less engine braking provides a smoother wheelie
More engine braking will bring the front wheel down faster if you close the throttle

Let the Wheelie Experience discussion continue here.

Here I am, simply jealous you all have slipper clutches at all. Let me go find $2K for the clutch cover, slipper, and install ; ) lol

I recommend the STM! You may pay a little more, but you're getting the best.

Does having a slipper actually help with wheelies though? I thought it would be quite the opposite. (I've never had a slipper clutch either and I'm not sure if I track enough to warrant one)
Disabling your DTC with the torque the big two cylinder Ducati's produce, will transform your Panigale into a wheelie monster.
Pushed my EBC back to 3 yesterday, made for much smoother whullies, 10/10 would recommend.

Slipper only effects your engine brake or "free wheel".

Thanks for the clarity. : ) So the engagement is still firm and crisp.

Yes!
Something new happend today

Ever since getting the M1200R I stopped toying around with wheelies on the 959. However, this afternoon once I started moving, I just gave it a good whack a little more than usual and up he went up. Now that per se is not unusual but it did happen while the TC was in default sport setting which is. I was pleasantly surprised. However, I should mention that this year, 1) my gearing is (-1F) and 2) Sport mode is set to max power.

So I experimented further. I tried the same in 2nd gear but that didn't work...at least with my limited wheelie skills. I then disabled the TC in default Race mode and sure enough, up he went on power alone in 2nd and it happened around 60mph give or take. Who-Da-Known. :grin2:

That's interesting. I run in Race / High but have the TC on 3 for a safety cushion coming out of corners. I don't think mine will pull up in 2nd on a flat surface w/ TC on 3.
Of course I suck at wheelies anyway...

Same here....but no fear of a rear wheel lift under hard braking.
