My bike was left alone for a full day (24 hours) and had trouble starting. It would start and stay at ~1krpm for half a second and turn off. I tried 3 times, and then the 4th time I applied a bit of throttle and the bike stayed on and has no problems.

Any idea what it could have been?
Other threads say it could be:
battery, fuel filter, or air filter.

No sure what to think right now, but may have to take it in to get the battery tested.

That kind of bites on a brand new machine, I'd be tempted to rule out battery if it cranked at normal starter speed. Ditto the fuel filter or airfilter on a brand new bike.

I think these Ducatis are going to be a little bit cold blooded on first start up of the day and you're going to have to figure out the drill that works with your machine. I've heard the throttle position is critical for starting these things. I pick mine up in the morning at 9:00, I'll ask the techs about this. I'm used to Jap bikes that always hit after a couple spins of the crank and drop into a the fast idle warmup mode. You may have to learn to whisper to it in Italian before tapping the starter button....lol!

Bummer. That doesn't sound like a battery issue to me. It really only stayed on for 1/2 second before turning off? That sounds like it didn't even really start. I'd be interested to hear if it happens again. Have you heard about this happening to anyone else? Did anyone report this occurring on the 899?

*knock on wood*
I haven't had that happen to me yet. I've got 1,150 miles on mine. So, of course I've started it quite a few times. And I've left it for a few days, and when I came back to it had no problem starting it. But if I encounter something similar, I'll definitely respond here.

It's warm here in Dallas, that might help, forecast for 75 tomorrow. Looking forward to a nice breakin ride out in the twisties on the way home from the dealer with the new 959. I'll report any starting issues. They do turn over pretty slow I've noticed, just part of the experience I guess.

BTW, keep an eye on the swing arm where the chain passes on the left side. One report of scuffing so far, like the chain is slapping.

Are you trying to start it while it is still on the side stand? Is it different with the bike upright (with you sitting on it)?

I'll keep an eye out. Going to put on that NRC Fender Eliminator kit today (Saturday). I also get a Sena 20s bluetooth headphone thingy today. Can't wait to get it all sorted out. :)

That shouldn't make a difference for him, should It? I start mine while it is on its side stand ( in neutral) all the time...

I have seen a couple of people have starting issues when on the stand. Nothing scientific, but just see if you get the same issue sat on the bike.

I shopped several different dealers for mine and remember them starting the bike several times always on the side stand. As I recall the starter turns the engine through very slowly but I think that's typical of a big v-twin in general. The engine quitting after starting doesn't sound right, these are fuel injected engines after all, the ECU should look at coolant temp and schedule enough fuel to ensure smooth operation.

I've got a similar problem with mine at the moment.

When cold, it seems to be taking between 3-5 attempts before it starts but once it's warm there's no issues. There also seems to be no difference on whether the bike is on its stand or upright.

I think i got it.

I had the problem earlier again, but I think that I'm just not holding the start button down long enough. I held it down longer and it fired on the second attempt.

Checking in - I had this issue pop up twice today. Once first thing this morning and then again after sitting for about 6 hours. Once warm all works properly.

I'm going to be taking it in for the first service in a week or so and I'll definitely be bringing this up.
